Segamat

A border state
Oil palm rubber estates
A rural setting in the north
For those visiting from the south

In the fifties the English school
Students go there as a rule
For the town a landmark
Surrounding grounds like a park

Teachers from all over
Education needs they cover
On Jalan Pegawai teachers' quarters
Called the enclave for schoolmasters

Wooden houses on stilts
Ungrilled doors windows this way built
At a lower level the kitchen
With a coal fired oven

Rooms airy and bright
Bathed in morning and evening light
Plank floors kind to the feet
Made to beat the heat

Both ends of the road army garrison
For foreign troops a temporary station
Blue bereted British Tommys in jungle green
Gurkhas tilted hats make them smart and clean

The rest house a welcome stop
For food and rest travelers stop
Dr Chandran of the hospital in charge
All staff good work they discharge

In season durians galore
Stalls for travelers’ fruits kept in store
Villagers this way a living making
A nice way by giving and taking

In the rainy season isolated
River lowlands so located
OM`s bridge from the south
Washed over roads in the north

Trains ride with caution
Feeling their way in slow motion
In very bad weather airdrops for mail
Very few now can recall this tale

People of Segamat know
In daily routine to flow
Simple things to them give pleasure
This way they enjoy life and leisure

The Spreading Neem

Sitting in quiet repose
Green lawn in full expose
Branching Neem boughs lean
Laden thick in dark green

Home and refuge to teeming life
Bees squirrels and butterflies
Chirping birds only at dawn
To the nearby Sakura drawn

Shady swing so inviting
For birds squirrels so exciting
Breadcrumbs in hanging plate
Impatient visitors do not wait

Beehive at home with Neem
Deceptively silent team
Abundance and richness its quality
Natures marvels not for vanity

Upright palms reddish stems
Flowering plants beautiful items
Bushy shrub dark laden leaves
Sanctuary for bird squirrels and bees

The view at dawn in emerging light
A paradise deserving sight
Hanging ferns bearded wisdom
Vibrant waves from the plant kingdom

Nature`s bounty at its best
Pristine dazzling off the west
Our home at number seven
Kelana Jaya a real haven

Kluang Calling

Kluang in mid Johore
Rubber oil palm catered for
For surrounding estates a centre
Supplies and services to cater

In the fifties a British garrison
Remained until war on terrorists was won
The town saw a boom
Bustling with hardly any room

Shops for new needs catering
All of what Gurkhas ANZAC troops needing
Souvenirs silks linen clothing
Food beverages other pleasures providing

One such shop comes to mind
Parwani Silks easy to find
Curios cloth for suits and dresses
Many for these things rushing

The town the railway dividing
Good access north and south providing
Anand  Bhavan for Indian food
Chinese food in stalls equally good

Cut off the township in this way
Offices schools residences across the railway
Rolling hills for government housing
Our house on one such hill arising

Across the lawn a broad view
Of the golf course other houses so few
A winding road leading
To our house on a hillside perching

The Govt. English school a landmark
For education then a hallmark
Mr M Nair its headmaster
To the school brought luster

The hospital rest house police airstrip
Cattle farm rail station for trips
Uncrowded leisurely peaceful
For easy reach people grateful

In the fifties towns in Johore
With this ambience can`t ask for more
Tennis golf field games
Teams in tournaments making names

As a visitor to Kluang
From such glimpses memories rang
Towns of today weary bustling
No chance to avoid this hustling

Kluang`s golden days
Lost forever those leisurely ways
Am I nostalgic to be so inclined
Know that changes can`t be declined
