Mind the Doors

Arrived London in January
Coldest month through February
Snowfall for the first time seeing
Like cotton wisps down floating

Soon the land covered in white
Rooftops trees roads sidewalks overnight
Snow snow everywhere
Time for overcoats mufflers gloves to wear

My classes September beginning
Long wait in the months coming
Driving lessons with Mr Gibson
License got after fifteen lessons

Croydon public library for reading
A good place for information gathering
At Lyons corner a cup of tea sausage roll
Tea for the British a balming of the soul

Now and then trips to London
Taking the train from Croydon
Passing Battersy power station
Its chimneys landmark to the nation

Victoria station rush hour crowded
By arrival and departure boards guided
Briefcases umbrellas bowler hatted
Office goers for taxis gathered

 Museums street singers lively bunch
India House for a good curry lunch
Indian news documentary
Nice to hear De Mello`s commentary

London amidst the crowd
Conversations never too loud
Londoners keep to themselves
Need to be self - reliant oneself

Enrolled for my course
Classes for me a good recourse
At Chelsea Polytechnic Manresa Road
For the Art School also an abode

Three years of hard study
Earning a London university degree
To language and culture awakening
Improving skills in note taking

Finchley  Golder`s Green  places of stay
From college quite a long way away
An hours` ride by the underground
In London best way to get around

Golder`s Green my choice
Well away from traffic and noise
The sprawling heath close by
Under a shady tree used to lie

Into a fairy land in spring
Flowers bees and butterflies bring
Coffee at the Bamboo Expresso Bar
Marinella for lunch not too far

Holidays in the continent
In France Germany wonderful moments
As a student on a tight budget
With fruits bread cheese hardships one forgets

Germany Austria a special attraction
People with me mixed with no restriction
Munich Salzburg Strasbourg the Black Forest
With a zest for life hardworking and modest

To me a choice given
Return or stay on in Britain
On a bench at Trafalgar Square
Decided to rejoin family for whom I care

A P & O passage on the Carthage
Forwarding agents handled my luggage
Took the train to Margate
Boarded ship without too much wait

Wan Ismail a likable cabin mate
A Johore nobles Onn Jaafar`s relative
Ships first port call Bombay
With sightseeing all had a good day

Singapore at last after 20 days at sea
A pleasant homecoming for me
My parents and sister waiting
Made way to a warm welcome awaiting

My blue sea trunk in the car loaded
To Kluang slowly headed
As headmaster father’s new posting
My next move now considering

The Blue Steel Trunk

From Kluang Singapore bound
With a heavy heart covering the ground
My parents` sister with me
All saddened one could see

The William Ray Dutch liner
At the docks a sight no finer
The dock crowded with cargo and people
My blue sea chest with padlocks double

Time for me at last to board ship
Made my way up in an emotional grip
From the deck seeing my people
Father talking to Onn Jaafar a Johore noble

Ships` horn loud and clear
Motors thudding one could hear
Securing ropes cast away
With waving hands goodbye I say

The ship moves out
Gaining speed as it turns about
Soon blue waters all around
Nosing our way destination bound

My cabin for four
A Chinese priest, an Indonesian and a Sikh
In Sumatra brief call at Belawan Roads
More for cargo to load

On board much to explore
My cabin can`t ask for more
Tiered decks so many
For walking bright and sunny

The Dutch ship Rotterdam registered
Crews their tasks have mastered
Sumptuous meals smoothly served
Soft music high standards preserved

Colombo our first main stop
Passengers to explore allowed to drop
Mount Levenia Hotel by the sea
Peaceful calm much to see

Snake charmers magicians
Malay descent people musicians
Gems and semi-precious stones
People with visitors business prone
                                                                            2
The Arabian Sea choppy windy
Passengers struggle to keep steady
With sea sickness many throw up
Crew with hoses ready to mop

A mixed group on board
Dutch expatriates Indonesians
The Dutch keeping to themselves
Rest of us mixing among ourselves

Things change after Suez Canal greatly
Europeans become suddenly friendly
Strange behavior puzzling
A colonial trait if anything

Naples our first European call
An old city with crumbling walls
People in drab clothes asking for money
Street vendors all kinds many

Gibraltar Rock with sharp slope
Africa almost touching Europe
A Spanish lady flamingo like embarks
All eyes on her no remarks

The Bay of Biscay choppy windy
Nothing for support handy
Making our way to Southampton
Good byes said by the ship`s captain

On the docks waiting my agent
Major Alexander Beatty a fine gent
My sea chest on the train loaded
As lost and found recorded

Keeping close to ones possessions
In our culture an obsession
Major Beatty knew well their system
Having faith in their honest customs

Driven to London with a break
At Aldershot for dinner tried to make
Major Beatty knew this base quite well
From people in uniforms one could tell

In the dusk one could see
Terrace houses like waves on the sea
Curtained windows yellow red light
In the cool evening a homely sight

Everything one sees orderly
Lighted streets to see clearly
Too cold to be out of doors
People mostly keeping indoors

From the outskirts of London
Made our way to Croydon
Mrs. Dunn my landlady
My room kept warm and ready

A butcher by trade was Mr Dunn
Helped by his son Fred Dunn
My blue steel trunk at last recovered
To Charring Cross station forwarded

In the mid-fifties after the world war
London the brunt of air raids bore
Here and there bombed out sites and rubble
The British going about life brave and humble

Red double-decker busses
So convenient to users
Black quaint taxis high roofed
Top hatted men could be comfortable and aloof

Everything smooth and orderly
Trains buses tubes running punctually
Shopkeepers bright and cheerful
Fixed prices no haggling helpful

A long way from home
Now for me to explore and roam
To keep to my given word
My goals working hard toward

Black and White

I look but do not see
Even at a pinky sea
For granted things taken
Colours contrasts easily forgotten

Leaves shades of green
Sunlight making colourful screen
Black and white night and day
All made up this way

What goes up comes down
In cycles they come
Nothing without its opposite
Positive follows negative

Similar and dissimilar
Shifting always in nature
Man two never the same
Even with like name

Everything rests in duality
A universal reality
Accept both knowing
All things always changing

Clouds high rain becoming
With sunshine rainbows forming
Leaves without light perish
Shade trees birds relish

Nature a fitting game
In pairs they always came
Each with the other in balance
 Working in deep silence

Everything well fitting
Opposites well meeting
If nature`s way we master
Little chance for a disaster

Nature`s creation a marvel
Sea land birds animals plants as well
Man`s greatest ability
Thinking reasoning a special quality

Acting with broad vision
Protecting saving our life`s mission
A promise we work toward
For all creation a steward

A Ladies Land

By the rail track a quaint village
People here easy to engage
To the township and rail station
Ladies names have been given

After a leafy- haired lady the township named
Rail station by young ladies claimed
To one –side the ancient Siva temple
Goddess Devi for unity a good example

Surrounded by yellowing paddy
End of spring for harvesting ready
Women bent with scythes cutting
Paddy stems in heaps stacking

A feast for birds so many
Scrambling for grain antics so funny
Grain threshed and dried
Covered and stored by the side

Looking at the village people
The young and the old for example
About most working adults
Earning abroad with good results

Homes to their return look forward
Short leave just a brief reward
In this way families have flourished
Life`s good things now being relished

Choices now for all to see
New skills never could foresee
The young now need not abroad venture
At home now beckon greener pastures

The country seeing an explosion
Of IT skills now in fashion
The ladies neck to neck in this field
Flourishing careers for them sealed

A revival of arts and culture
For people with money and leisure
All of life`s finer things
This new affluence brings

A land with a rich past
Lost its glory pretty fast
Now a very good chance
For a new glory to advance

From a slumber now awakening
Opportunities well taking
21st Century in a new making
To a bright future all staking

Values the country’s bedrock
Now for wealth to unlock
Both by fine balance fed
By strong leaders must be led

From Sahara to Wembley

Creating something from nothing
A task demanding everything
An order to found a new school
My task making many a rule

First time when visiting
Could not help but sighing
Helpless like a surge
Pushing me to the verge

Paper pencil in hand
With my trusted band
All that needed in a school
One by one put into a pool

From Sahara to an oasis
A green Wembley arises
Distant towers of the city
Promise of heights so mighty

The first batch real pioneers
Together daring new frontiers
Hardships shortages bravely faced
Skill and resolve cleverly paced

Beloved students of yesteryear
A family close so dear
Boys to gentlemen they flourished
With values of life so cherished

The best in sports and studies
Boys struggling to match ladies
A rugby team with no match
A legacy of this early batch

Ian Gordon made rugby shine
His team never to cross the line
Training in rain and shine
Teamwork in spirit so fine

Hokey football Indran`s coaching
Lim Heng Sing always there helping
Pain is temporary all will know
From glory all these will flow

Wynn Jones Markham Clifford
Expert teachers from aboard
Malaysian teachers to be proud
Saad Yassin`s efforts speak so loud

Zahidi Hussaini Seth Raja Idris and others
SMSS shaped by all such movers
Lest this proud legacy be forever lost
My tribute to pioneers deserving most
