Nemmara Town

On the road to Chittilenchery
Then to Trichur via Vadakancheri
To get to places buses taken
Colourful buses plying often.

Puthanthara, the town named
As New Ground locally called
Is it new among others?
An emerging town it appears.

Shop lots crowding roads on either sides
Hard ware, tailoring, provisions, pots and pans
A `T` Junction in the centre making
To settlements away leading.

Summers dust buses whipping
People with hands faces covering
With Vallangi township merging
Farm produce to Vallangi Market bringing.

Grandfather once a week with farm produce
Coconuts, areca nuts, yams and jackfruit
Always with goodies returning
Sweets, halva, mutton for cooking.

At the meeting point between
Nemmara and Vallengi
District Hospital and Police Station
Early patients for medical attention.

Nemmara High School along the road located
Each class room built separate
Square one-room structures
In orderly rows featured.

Noise and interference this way avoided
Connecting paths top reach provided
In rainy weather an umbrella a must
Teachers to classes walking bent and fast.

My teachers several
All of them male
Chamukutty Master, Narayanan Pundit
Unni Master, Koppu Master, Kesava Pundit.

Two years here of action
With intense Malayalam tuition
Narayanan Pundit for Sanskrit
Elective language needing time and grit.

  1. Nemmara is the gateway to the Nelliampathy mountains of the Western ghats where a lot of tea and coffee plantations are located. These estates get some of their supplies from Nemmara. The population of the town lived in strictly segregated areas, the Brahmins in Gramams, the Nairs in Tharavads and the Sudras in the farms where they worked. This strict segregation broke down when the Communists gained control of the State and nationalised land holdings, when there was a mass exodus of the Brahmin community to other states, mainly Tamil Nadu and Bombay.
